Hi friend, welcome to Episode 05 of The Fit Flamingo Podcast! In this episode, I share 3 ways to reframe your relationship with your body and fall in love with the magic of movement.

Here are the show notes:

How to Reframe your Relationship with Your Body

I think so many of us struggle to feel good enough in our own skin. So I wanted to share the tips and tools that help me and my clients reframe how we feel in our bodies. Sometimes all it takes is a mindset shift to help us see ourselves in a new light.

Dear friend, you are worthy of loving your body. Instead of hating, critiquing, and comparing yourself to other people let’s step into our power, celebrate everything our bodies can DO, and fall in love with the magic of movement. You are worthy of this!!

Friendly reminder: take what you need, leave what you don’t. These are TOOLS! Some of these tools may work for you while others don’t — and that’s okay. Some tools only work for a season and others will be used every single day! Keep doing your best while you build your self-love toolbox. You’re doing a really good job!

01 | Change The Conversation

Start to acknowledge how you feel when you look at yourself in the mirror or see a picture of yourself. What thoughts or feelings are coming up for you?

It may feel uncomfortable to acknowledge it. But trust the process. Once we bring this thought or feeling out into the light, we can start to move through it.

Next, we’re going to replace that negative thought/feeling with an empowering statement that you would love to be TRUE for you. How do you want to feel everyday? What do you want to believe about yourself? Who do you want to be?

Radiant, courageous, kind, loving?

Start training yourself to love your reflection and see the best in yourself!!

We’re forming a new habit and habits take time to form. But when you show up little by little for yourself, you will see BIG results.

Friend, we’re not going to kick ourselves down anymore! It’s time to build yourself up and be on your own team.

02 | Check In With The Way You Talk about Yourself & Your Body

How do you talk about yourself to other people? Do you push compliments away? Do you say things like, “I hate myself” + “I’m a hot mess” + “I always mess things up?” If so, how do you think those things will impact the way you feel about your body?

Check in with the words you use to describe yourself!

To do this think, how is my self-talk impacting the way I see myself? How are my thoughts/feelings keeping me small? How can I think about myself in a way that is empowering and uplifting?

03 | Fall in Love with The Magic of Movement

Now I’m not talking about working out! Movement and working out are two entirely different things. Sometimes they are the same, but often they sit in two different corners of the room!

Movement is freeing, fun, expansive, and it includes literally anything and everything.

Working out includes things like CrossFit, weight lifting, running 5 miles, going to a HIIT class, etc!

When you think about simply moving your body, it opens you up to all the incredible benefits of movement without carrying all the shame and expectations that can be associated with working out.

The Benefits of Movement:

  • It’s energizing, empowering, and an opportunity to take up space
  • Helpful for decreasing joint pain, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression
  • Decreases physical pain/tension and relieves emotional stress
  • Helps you connect with your body and learn body awareness
  • Reduces risk of injury and increases longevity
  • Improves digestion and skin clarity
  • Helps you connect with friends & family
  • Boosts mental clarity and reduces brain fog
  • And soooo much more!

When we fall in love with the magic of movement, what we’re really doing is falling in love with everything our body is capable of DOING. Even if your body doesn’t move the way you wish it did (or the way it used to), there are still a lot of beautiful ways you can take up space and move in a way that feels fun and healing to you.

Movement isn’t “one size fits all.” It’s all about discovering what feels good for YOU. Let yourself have fun! Stand up, stretch, walk around, take up space, and soak in all the benefits of movement.

PS — Here are a few bonus tips for feeling confident in yourself as you approach movement:

Bonus! How to Feel Confident As You Approach Movement

Bonus Tip 01 | As often as you can, move without being in front of a mirror. When you exercise in front of a mirror, it automatically sends you to a place of self-monitoring, comparison, and critique. It can take the focus off how we feel and place greater emphasis on what we look like.

If you’re checking your posture or form, that’s totally fine! I want you to be safe and grow in your body awareness. But if you realize that every time you look in the mirror you judge yourself, let’s mix things up and set ourselves up for success.

Get outside if you can and start tuning into how the movement feels in your body (not just what you look like when you’re moving).

Bonus Tip 02 | Be intentional about what you wear. This is an opportunity for you to feel confident and good in your own skin! Find what actually feels good and safe for your body, knowing that you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone else anymore. You get to do what’s best for you and your body!

If you feel like you’re always pulling up your leggings or tugging at your sports bra to stay in place, you won’t feel as free and fun. Instead, you’ll constantly be worrying about what you look like! And movement is about so much more than just what you look like. When you feel good, it’s feel easier for you to show up fully you!

Friend, I’m cheering you on and I’m sending you all the love in the world.

You are enough.
