How I turned my passion into the business of my dreams:
I am writing to you with the biggest smile on my face. And to be honest, I have tears swelling up in my eyes because I feel so passionate about the words I am about to write.
After almost a full year of construction, I was able to open The Fit Flamingo Studio and it has been an absolute dream come true. I can’t even begin to describe how good it feels to work with women every single day.
The work we do within this studio space is transformational. It is healing and empowering and it’s my promise that if you train with me, you will not leave the same. You will be deeply impacted from the inside out. You will feel supported and encouraged in a way you never have before and you will find a new love for yourself that has been missing for too long.
With all my heart, I believe in the power and magic of movement. And here’s the deal. I absolutely love personal training. Like, it brings me to tears to think about the women I get to move and train with. My heart fills to the max in these sessions because when my clients enter the studio, they let every single wall fall down. They know this is a safe place to feel all the deep scary stuff because they know healing is just around the corner.
Together, we laugh and cry and pour out our hearts to each other because let’s face it, fitness is about so much more than just weight loss and #gains.
As women, we all have reasons why we do and don’t workout and why we do and don’t eat. We carry trauma in our bodies, holding on to the emotional scars that we endured as young girls. We’ve grown up believing that we aren’t enough, that we’re too much, or that we have to protect ourselves because if we don’t, no one else will. We’ve been sexually abused, emotionally traumatized, and verbally beat down. We’ve been cheated on and hurt by people we thought we could trust. We’ve had our hearts broken and we’ve experienced loss and grief. And we blame ourselves for so much of what we’ve been through.
I truly believe that we cannot achieve total body wellness without addressing the emotional, spiritual, and mental components of health while we simultaneously work on the physical. For that reason, I feel called to make my job as a personal trainer about more than just giving you a good workout. I want to help you connect the dots between your physical and emotional struggles because I have come to learn that emotional pain, sadness, depression, anger, and trauma physically effect our bodies in profound ways.
For example, it is not uncommon for women who have experienced rape to put on weight because they want to do everything they can to keep men from looking at their bodies. Many women who struggle with an eating disorder often feel like their life is spiraling out of control and may even feel unworthy to reside in their own bodies. Those of us who struggle with body dismorphia can look back to our childhood and recall the harsh words our own mothers used to describe their bodies or even ours as we grew up.
Now these are all very generalized statements and I want to be very clear that there isn’t one direct link or cause connecting emotional pain and physical symptoms. I just wanted to provide a few examples that would allow you to start connecting the dots to your own trauma and struggles.
Every single one of us will interpret our emotions in different ways. And man, this stuff is heavy!!
So with my studio, I wanted to create a beautiful and welcoming space where women could gather, let down their guard, and learn what it looks like to have a healthy, healing relationship with their bodies. In the posts to come, I will take a deeper dive into this idea of what it means to heal from the inside out because we all carry beliefs about ourself that may or may not be true. And healing these limiting beliefs and learning how to love ourselves are key components in seeing physical results in the gym.
That’s why I wanted to create The Fit Flamingo Studio.
It’s unlike any gym I’ve ever been too. And although I may be biased, I’m confident you would agree!! 😉
Here’s a lil backstory on the studio space:
In April of last year, I took the plunge and purchased a brand new 40 foot shipping container, customized with foam insulation, electric wiring, an A/C unit, and a built-in sliding glass door & window. My dad gave me backyard space outside his company’s office in Downtown Plano, Texas under the pretense that I would help him part time with accounting and administrative tasks for his environmental consulting firm. It was a dream come true. While my studio space was being renovated, I got to learn first hand how to run a successful business. I learned so much from my father this year and every single new skill has helped me in starting my own business (although nothing can fully prepare you for entrepreneurship!).
Check out these before and after photos of the studio!
I’m still working part time for my dad and have started training family members and close friends for what I’m calling my “soft opening.” I plan on having a big grand opening party in the Fall after I marry the man of my dreams this coming September! By then, my hope is to have the studio in full swing, fully decorated, and ready to grow!
But in the meantime, I am taking a few clients a day, with my April goal being to have 12 sessions a week. I’m gearing up to teach a “love your body” workshop with a dear friend and yoga instructor in the month of May and will continue to host one workshop each month in the studio. I’m starting small and investing all my time and energy into building a solid foundation that will really set my business up for success because the work we do here in the studio is LIFE CHANGING!!!!
So with that said, what big dreams are on your heart? What are the tiny whispers telling you to pursue? Big dreams can seem pretty overwhelming. But little by little, a little becomes a lot.
Dear friends, the dreams on your heart are not there by mistake. They are your freakin’ calling!!!! So please, I urge you. Pursue them at all costs. Do not die with your music still in you!!! Find a tiny tiny small way that you can set out to pursue your dreams TODAY.
For example, you can:
- Listen to a podcast that challenges your thoughts.
- Sit in a meditation and visualize yourself living out your dream.
- Tell a friend what you really want to do with your life.
- Journal out your biggest life goal and then list out all the things you’ll need to do to get there.
- Reach out for professional help. If you need to work with a counselor or a personal trainer or a coach of any sort, do not hesitate to reach out!
So, what will you do today?
There is magic inside of you.
You are already enough.
And you are more beautiful and magnificent than you know.
I hope that me pursuing my dreams will give you the permission you need to pursue your own. I deeply desire to use my own struggles, insecurities, fears, and perceived failures and inadequacies to help you see that you are not alone. We are all in this together. And little by little, we will transform into the women we have always been. Sometimes we just need a little help from each other to recognize the beauty and power already within us.
So with that, I’m signing off with so much love for YOU.
Thank you for reading all the thoughts and feels on my heart.
