January 2018 Life Recap! + How to Stay on Top of New Year Goals

Hi there, hello! Wow how crazy is it that January has already come and gone. I’ve been a lil quiet lately, I know!! I took this whole month off from blogging and posting to Instagram because I wanted to align my heart and mind with the dreams and hopes I have for this year, without the influence and pressure of social media. I hoped this time away would allow me to dive deeper into myself, asking those hard motive-revealing questions of why I do what I do cause AH! Life can be a lot sometimes!

If you handed me a blank piece of paper, I could fill the page in a matter of minutes with all the things I wanted to do, grow in, become, problem solve, read or learn! There are just so many things that I want to do!! And so so many things I would want to change or improve within myself! Craziness.

The truth is, it’s really easy for me to be overwhelmed by my mega list of to-do items and sometimes I can be really discouraged (and tired, quite frankly!) in striving to keep up this balancing act. So how can I streamline my to-do list and add more intention to my day so that the things I do actually add up to the something I hope most to accomplish in the end?!

Here’s what I’ve been focusing on this past month! This has really really helped me stay on top of my goals in a way that feels very natural, well-paced, and not overly consuming.

There are three lil bits of this quote that I love and wanna break down! Stay with me!! This has changed the way I view my dreams, goals, and hopes in the coolest way. I hope it can add value to your life as you conquer the goals you set for this 2018 year.

01 Do something everyday

The place you are in today is an accumulation of the decisions, sacrifices, and steps you have made in the days prior. And what you put in today (your time, energy, or lack there of!) will be manifested tomorrow. Your tomorrow will be positively or negatively affected by the choices you are currently making!

It’s actually pretty incredible to think that today we have the power to become who we want most to be. Today, we can make our dreams happen. Today, we get to choose who we will become, how we will treat people, how we will react to difficult challenges. But we have to live this day — the here and now — with intention, which is definitely easier said than done! But this next point keeps me from growing too anxious…

02 Move one step forward

As I’m thinking through my day, I will ask myself, what can I do today? This week? This month? It helps me to break my goal into smaller pieces. I know that if I consistently do a little, it will soon add up to a lot. Sometimes a little piece of my goal looks like me reaching out to plan time with a photographer, posting a picture to Instagram, spending time working on my business plan, getting coffee with an inspiring friend, peer, or professional in my network. Sometimes my little daily goal even looks like going for a walk or run, scheduling 5 minutes into my day to work on my deep breathing, or setting time aside to read a motivational book from an author living the dream I too want to live… There are so many ways this could go! It matters most that you do something small in the direction of your dream. Taking one little step day after day will be the biggest game changer for you achieving any goal you set.

03 Identify your major goal

What do you want!! Who do you want to be?! Most of us have a long lonnnng list! But ask yourself this:

If you could wake up tomorrow and have any one thing be magically changed or there, what would you wish for?

Would you wish for that dream body? A boyfriend/girlfriend? Financial peace? A more purposeful job?

What is the ONE thing in your life that feels like it’s missing? You know, that one thing that would make every other thing seem better or easier or more enjoyable? Identify what that one thing is for you and then think about what it would take for you to reach that goal. Consider all the little ways you can make steps today to obtain your goal. Write it down!! When you focus in on one thing, you will reduce the anxiety and frustration of trying to be everything at once, feel more purposeful and productive, and be able to have grace on yourself when you feel like it’s taking longer than you think it should to get to where you want to be.

Big Magic — an incredibly incredible book for all creatives! Gilbert has a gracefully compelling way of speaking to my heart. She says things like, “do what you love to do, and do it with both seriousness and lightness” & “fold your dream into your everyday life” & “create whatever causes a revolution in your heart” — so good so good SO GOOD!

Buddha’s Brain — a neat book about the practical neuroscience of happiness, love, and wisdom. It talks about how we can literally change our brain chemistry by thinking positively. SO COOL. I’m learning so much in reading this.

Good Clean Food — A cookbook that I bought from the coolest New York bookstore back in November (momma & I went for a weekend girl’s trip to see the NYC Christmas lights!)

Podcasts!!! My favorites right now are The Quote of The Day Show by Sean Croxton + Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations + Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Big Magic above!)

Loving these products: 

Glossier You, a not-too-overpowering-but-oh-so-delightful fragrance from Glossier. I seriously love this stuff and spray a spritz of it right before I work out. It’s perfect!

I also just got this new Glossier exfoliating skin perfector called Solution that is supposed to help with acne and redness and skin texture. I’ll keep you up to date on how it works in a month or so!!

Currently wearing lots of: 

Outdoor Voices! The only day I’m not in their leggings is when I go to church. But literally every other day of the week I’m in sweats and sneakers and I don’t feel bad about it one bit! Just over here living my best life okay!!!

Really really grateful for: 

Spending so much time with my family in Florida over the holidays. The older I get, the more and more grateful I am to know and do life with this family of mine.

Life-long friendships! This week I said “see ya soon!” to one of my long time besties, who is leaving this Great State of Texas for a new adventure in New Jersey. Our moms were pregnant at the same time and we’ve known each other literally our whole entire lives! Friend shoutout: Brittané, I am so so inspired by your passion and enthusiasm for life. I will be missing you with all of my heart!!! But am so proud of you for chasing after your dreams in this way. I LOVE YOU.

THIS GUY. AH, I have been falling for William from the moment I met him at church back in August, after moving home to Dallas. We officially started dating two weeks ago! So so crazy and all too perfect.
